Passing from Death to Life

“But when He sees the Blood on the top and sides of the doorframe, the Lord will pass over your home. He will not permit His death angel to enter your house and strike you down.” - Exodus 12:23 NLT

We are in the season where Passover is celebrated. The Israelites were slaves in Egypt, when God commissioned Moses to go and set His people free that they may come and worship Him. Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go back to Pharaoh and announce to him, ‘This is what the Lord says: Let my people go, so they can worship me – Exodus 8:1 NLT

As a last judgement on the Egyptians, God told Moses to instruct the Israelites to kill a lamb and pass the blood over the top and sides of the doorframes of their house. This was done so that when the death angel pass, they will not be affected. God said to the Israelites, “Remember, these instructions are a permanent law that you and your descendants must observe forever. When you enter the land, the Lord has promised to give you, you will continue to observe this ceremony. Then your children will ask, ‘What does this ceremony mean?’ And you will reply, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice to the Lord, for He passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt. And though He struck the Egyptians, He spared our families.” – Exodus 12:24-27 NLT.

The killing of the lamb in the Old Testament is symbolic to the death of Yeshua. As followers of Christ, we need not sacrifice animals, for the ultimate sacrifice – the death of Yeshua – was done for all mankind. At the last supper with His disciples, Yeshua said to them, “This is My Blood, which confirms the covenant between God and His people. It is poured out as a sacrifice for many.” – Mark 14:24 NLT.

No longer do we need to put the blood of animals on our homes. Our bodies are now the home or the temple where the Spirit of the Lord dwells. What we are required to do is to present our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to the Lord.

When we were in sin, we were spiritually dead. We were once slaves to sin but have been set free because Yeshua’s Blood was shed to forgive our sins. Therefore, we are no longer slaves to sin, we are free in Christ. The bible says, “Without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sin” – no forgiveness of sin.

Just as the Israelites were instructed to remember what God had done for them – set them free from slavery, so we are to remember what Yeshua did for us – He set us free from sin. He took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then He broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “This is My Body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of Me.” After supper He took another cup of wine and said, “This cup is the new covenant between God and His people—an agreement confirmed with My Blood, which is poured out as a sacrifice for you.” – Luke 22:19-20 NLT.
