“Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls” - Matthew 11:29 KJV

Yeshua lived as a man in the way that God desires all His children to live: in lowliness of spirit and in complete dependence upon the Father. He lived as man is called to live, in order to demonstrate to us how we should live in utter dependence upon the Son so that we might know God intimately, and Jesus Christ Whom He has sent.
The only way to live the Christian life is in total reliance upon the Lord, clinging to Him by faith, admitting our helplessness, and trusting on His sufficient strength. And so He calls to us: "Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me."
Yeshua was meek and lowly in heart and we are to learn of Him. His entire life was spent living the life of a man that trusted entirely on God, and He did only those things that He heard from the Father. In like manner, when we take His yoke upon us and learn to live in continuous dependence upon Him, we too shall find rest for our souls, for His yoke is easy and His burden is light.
Yeshua offers rest to those who come to Him in childlike faith. Yeshua invites all people, not just the wise and clever. The rest Yeshua offers in His Kingdom means freedom from extra burdens the Pharisees and teachers of religious law implemented in their day and the additional rules we try to add onto our faith today.
Humble people can be free from a “try harder”, “do more” religion. To find rest, people must throw off the yoke of burdens and legalism. A yoke was a heavy wooden harness that would be put on oxen and attached to equipment the oxen pulled. Yeshua was likely referring to the hundreds of extra rules and requirements religious leaders were putting on people. If you have been devastated by sin, drained of joy by rule keeping or crushed by persecution or oppression this rest is for you. Yeshua gives love, peace and healing. Enter His rest.
