From Calling to Completion

‘Now may the God of shalom Himself make you completely holy; and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept complete, blameless at the coming of our Lord Yeshua the Messiah. Faithful is the One who calls you—and He will make it happen!’- 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 TLV

Paul’s prayer in 1 Thessalonians 5:23–24 reveals Adonai’s ultimate purpose: the complete sanctification of the believer—spirit, soul, and body. This is not merely moral improvement but a divine work of setting apart and transforming a person wholly unto Himself. Yet Scripture is clear that sinless perfection is not realized in this present life, for the flesh continues to oppose the Spirit (Galatians 5:17; Romans 7:18–23). The final victory awaits the moment when “the perishable puts on the imperishable” (1 Corinthians 15:53).

Sanctification unfolds in three inseparable dimensions:

1. Positional sanctification – At the moment of faith, the believer is set apart in Adonai, declared holy, and identified with a new life (Hebrews 10:10). This is a finished work, grounded not in human merit but in divine Grace.

2. Progressive sanctification – In daily life, Adonai works within the believer to conform them to His likeness. This process involves growth, discipline, and surrender, as the Spirit transforms us “from glory to Glory” (2 Corinthians 3:18; Philippians 2:12–13). The old self is not reformed but rendered powerless, while the new life is increasingly expressed.

3. Perfect (final) sanctification – This is the consummation of salvation, when believers are fully conformed and glorified at Adonai’s appearance (1 John 3:2; Philippians 3:20–21). Only then will the struggle with sin cease completely.

Throughout history, Adonai has been faithfully accomplishing His redemptive plan—to bring all things into unity and fullness (Ephesians 1:10; 4:13). His aim is not external reform but inward transformation into His image.

This divine work calls for a corresponding human response: to live in dependence on the Spirit—pursuing peace, encouraging others, showing patience, and overcoming evil with good (Romans 12:17–21; 1 Thessalonians 5:14–18). Yet even this response is empowered by Adonai Himself.

The assurance rests not in human effort but in His character: “Faithful is He who calls you, who also will do it” (1 Thessalonians 5:24). Sanctification, from beginning to end, is the work of Adonai—initiated by Him, sustained by Him, and completed by Him.
