Trust God's Plan, Not Your Own

“Thus says the LORD: ‘Would you build Me a house to dwell in?’ - 2 Samuel 7:5

Trusting God’s plans above our own reminds us that even good ideas must wait for His timing, direction, and greater purpose.

When David saw that “the ark of God dwells in a tent,” while he was living “in a house of cedar,” (v. 2), he suggested to Nathan the prophet that it was time to build a permanent house for God. Nathan encouraged David, “Go, do all that is in your heart, for the LORD is with you” (v. 3).

But neither of these men had prayed about this issue or sought God. They simply had assumed. It made sense…but God had different plans. Yes, a temple would be built, but David was not the man to do it. God’s temple was to be built by the man of His choice, at His time, in His way.

We must learn to inquire of the Lord; acknowledging Hin for every decision, and plan we have to make. Though the prophet Nathan thought it was a good idea and encouraged king David to “Go, do all that is in your heart’, it was not a God idea for David. God wanted these men, and us, to understand that we can never take His will for granted. His ways are higher than ours. We must seek Him, be guided by Him, and let Him direct our steps.

Over the centuries, many have decided to do good things for God without ever checking with Him first. They have moved forward on their own and made assumptions without seeking Him. How can we say we're doing things for God, when He's not acknowledged or not a part of it?

The Bible tells us God has plans for our lives: “I know the plans that I have for you … plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope” (Jeremiah 29:11). But we must seek Him and wait for His instructions.

Commit your way to God—every decision, every project.
