“And the Lord shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if that thou hearken unto the commandments of the Lord thy God, which I command thee this day, to observe and to do them.” - Deuteronomy 28:13 KJV

It is really important to study God’s Word and not quote what you may hear others say. Most times people quote only a part of the scripture. It is important to read the verses before and after any particular scripture.
Many persons quote the scripture reference of today, by simply saying, ‘I am the head and not the tail, above only and not beneath’. Yes, indeed as children of God this should be so. However, there is a very important part of the scripture that most people do not quote. There are conditions that are tied to the Word, to the promises of God. There is an expectation that must be met.
Let’s look at the scripture more deeply. We know God intends for us to be the head and above only, but He did not just stop there. We cannot think we can do what we want, live how we want and receive God’s promises. The scripture goes on to say, if that thou hearken unto the commandments of the Lord, thy God, which I command thee this day to observe and to do them.
Yes, there is something we must do, if we want to be the head and above only. We must observe and obey God’s commandments. Firstly, we need to know God’s commandments in order to do them. How do we know God’s commandments. We must read God’s Word, the bible in order to know what they are. It’s not enough to read them but to know and understand them. Most importantly, we must obey them. What good is it to know them but not obey? The blessing is in obedience. But Samuel answered, “Which pleases the Lord more: burnt offerings and sacrifices or obeying His commands? It is better to obey the Lord than to offer sacrifices to Him. It is better to listen to Him than to offer the fat from rams. Refusing to obey is as bad as the sin of sorcery. Being stubborn and doing what you want is like the sin of worshiping idols. You refused to obey the Lord’s command, so He now refuses to accept you as king.” - 1 Samuel 15:22-23 ERV
It’s good to know and hold on to the promises of God, but most important is to obey His commandments. Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land: But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it,” - Isaiah 1:18-20 KJV.
Let’s obey God’s commandments!
